Some Familiar Faces in the Chronicle

Yesterday's San Francisco Chronicle Datebook featured some familiar faces with a double feature on the San Francisco Film Society. Executive Director Ted Hope made the cover(!) and Filmmaker360 Director Michele Turnure-Salleo talked about helping great films get made.

From SFIFF to Oscar®

This year we can add to funding an Oscar nominated film (fingers-crossed for Beasts of the Southern Wild's four nominations!) that we will now be qualifying one!  The San Francisco International Film Festival has been chosen as an Academy-Award qualifying festival in the Documentary Short Subject category. Short documentaries of no longer than 40 minutes, which receive Best Documentary Short award, may be eligible to enter the Documentary Short Subject competition for the concurrent season (this year the season runs from September,1 2012 to August 31, 2013), provided the film meets all the requirements set forth in the Academy-Award official rules. This year's SFIFF Documentary Shorts in competition will soon be announced.  In the meantime, find the rules posted on

Free to Stream: Dozens of Rare Agnès Varda Shorts

Doc Alliance Films launched a new project The Greats of World Documentary Film with a retrospective of 17 documentary films by Agnès Varda.  Varda is no stranger to SFFS, having five films in SFIFF throughout the years.  These shorts are FREE to stream until February 17!  We agree with our source tipper, Director of Finance Keith Cowling, this is "pretty cool."

RIP (Rest in Professionalism): SFFS Boy Wonder, Jay Wertzler

Five years of sparkling youth, karoke raps, and remarkable flashpants wisdom - damn how we will miss our Jaybird (aka Jay Wertzler)!  Flying away from the SFFS nest, but first making a detour to pick up Pootie Tang at the airport for next week's SF Sketchfest.  We appreciate all of you and know that your mark on us is for life.   Big up and warm those vocals for the next SFIFF talent show - sa da tay!
