Blackfish
Dir: Gabriela  Cowperthwaite
Documentary Feature
USA, 2012

Opens July 26 at Century San Francisco Centre 9  and Shattuck Cinemas.

Cowperthwaite has more on her mind than simply exposing SeaWorld’s questionable dealings with Tilikum. The film makes a strong case that the whales are incredibly intelligent, evolved creatures that aren’t suited for small pens, no matter how cute and humanlike we think these animals are when they do tricks.

Computer Chess
Dir: Andrew Bujalski
Narrative Feature
USA, 2013

Opens July 26 at Century San Francisco Centre 9  and Shattuck Cinemas.

COMPUTER CHESS is a lot of things, a satire about the dawn of the computer age and a black comedy about the human desire to transcend the self - and the wrong paths that people take in that pursuit. It’s some variety of near-great movie, but not the type that sends audiences out transformed and exhilarated. The rewards here are different - contemplative, melancholy, peculiar.
— Mick LaSalle, SF Chronicle
